According to the Royal Air Force, RAF Coningsby is one of two RAF Quick Reaction Alert stations protecting UK airspace (the other is RAF Lossiemouth). It is home to two frontline, combat-ready squadrons and is the training station for Typhoon pilots. The station opened in 1941, was home to 617 Squadron, the Dambusters, during the second half of the Second World War, and has been home to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight since 1976.
