Bomber County: Aviation Heritage Near Boston

Lincolnshire is known as Bomber County. Here are four places to explore its history from The Barn, with each site's own opening times and dog rules.

Aviation heritage from The Barn

Lincolnshire's flat, open landscape made it home to many Second World War bomber airfields, which is why the county is known as Bomber County. That history is still very much alive, and several important sites are within a day out of The Barn at White House Farm, near Boston.

Because dogs can't be left alone in The Barn or the garden, we've said clearly which places welcome dogs and which don't. That way you can plan a day your dog can join, or a dog-free visit while someone in your group stays with the dog.

Check before you go: opening times, access and dog rules change. Every place in this guide links to its own official website, and we checked each one on 18 October 2026. Please check the latest details there before you set off.

Hangar tours at RAF Coningsby

The BBMF Visitor Centre is run by Lincolnshire County Council in partnership with the Royal Air Force. It gives public access to the home of the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, inside the boundaries of RAF Coningsby. Access to the hangar is by guided tour only. Tours begin at 10:30, and the last tour is at 15:30 from March to October and 15:00 from November to February. The centre is open Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays.

Before you go

The council says only registered assistance dogs are allowed on site, so make this a dog-free trip. No bags are allowed in the hangar, but cameras without bags are fine. The council can't guarantee hangar access or which aircraft will be there. Lancaster PA474 is away on a major service at Duxford and is expected back in 2027. The 2026 adult tour price is £12.50, and parking is free.

Planning a Bomber County day with your dog

Dogs must not be left alone in The Barn or the garden when you go out. If you'd like to see the BBMF hangar, plan it as a dog-free trip, with someone in your group staying with the dog. Or pair it with Tattershall Castle's grounds, the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre or the IBCC gardens, where dogs are welcome on a lead. Days and hours vary between these sites, so check each one before you set off.
